Definition

Let ℳ\mathcal{M} be a space of Earth models, such as functions giving a physical property at each point of a region. Let 𝒟=ℝN\mathcal{D} = \R^N be the space of data. Let G ⁣:ℳ→𝒟G \colon \mathcal{M} \to \mathcal{D} be a forward operator given by the governing physics, and let d∈𝒟d \in \mathcal{D} be observed data, with d=G(mtrue)+ed = G(m_{\mathrm{true}}) + e for an unknown error ee. Geophysical inversion is the inverse problem of finding models m∈ℳm \in \mathcal{M} with G(m)G(m) close to dd within the size of the errors. The usual formulation is the regularised least squares problem min⁡m∈ℳ∥Wd(G(m)−d)∥2+λ∥Wm(m−mref)∥2.\min_{m \in \mathcal{M}} \norm{W_d (G(m) - d)}^2 + \lambda \norm{W_m (m - m_{\mathrm{ref}})}^2. Here WdW_d weights the data by their errors, and WmW_m measures the roughness or size of the model. The model mrefm_{\mathrm{ref}} is a reference model, and λ>0\lambda > 0 is a trade-off parameter.

Remarks

Example: in straight-ray travel-time inversion, mm is the slowness in nn cells and G(m)=AmG(m) = A m, where AijA_{ij} is the length of ray ii in cell jj. The problem is linear, and the minimiser solves (ATWdTWdA+λWmTWm) m=ATWdTWd d+λWmTWm mref.(A^T W_d^T W_d A + \lambda W_m^T W_m)\, m = A^T W_d^T W_d\, d + \lambda W_m^T W_m\, m_{\mathrm{ref}}. Non-example: forward modelling, the computation of G(m)G(m) for a given mm, is not an inversion. The penalty term is a form of Tikhonov regularization, and λ\lambda is often chosen so that the data misfit matches the expected size of the errors. Bayesian inversion replaces the minimiser by a posterior probability distribution on ℳ\mathcal{M}.
