Statement
Let be a filtered probability space, let , and let be a Brownian motion for under . Let be a progressively measurable process with almost surely. Let be the Doléans-Dade exponential: Assume , and let be the probability measure on with . Then the process is a Brownian motion for under .
Remarks
The Itô integral in the exponent makes a positive local martingale under , and the hypothesis makes it a true martingale on . By Itô's product rule, is a local martingale under , so is a continuous local martingale under . Its quadratic variation is still , so Lévy's characterization shows that it is a Brownian motion under . Novikov's condition implies . Example: for a constant , the density is , and under the process is a Brownian motion with drift . Without , the measure has total mass less than and is not a probability measure.

For a student
Girsanov's theorem is the standard way to remove or add a drift in a stochastic differential equation. In mathematical finance, it gives the risk-neutral measure under which discounted prices are martingales. It also yields weak solutions of equations with a bounded measurable drift , and likelihood ratios for statistics of diffusions. The theorem extends to general continuous local martingales in place of .
