Statement
Let be a probability space with a filtration . Let be a real adapted process with continuous paths and . Assume that and are both local martingales. Then is a Wiener process, and for all the increment is independent of .
Remarks
The second hypothesis says that the quadratic variation of is . For a fixed , Itô's formula shows that is a local martingale; it is bounded on bounded time intervals, hence a martingale. So , which identifies the conditional law of the increment as normal with mean and variance . Continuity is necessary: for a Poisson process of rate , both and are martingales, but is not a Wiener process. In dimension , a continuous process with is a -dimensional Wiener process if each and each is a local martingale.
Going deeper
For a student
The theorem is the standard way to recognise a Brownian motion inside stochastic calculus. It gives the Dambis–Dubins–Schwarz theorem: a continuous local martingale with is a time-changed Brownian motion, . It is also a step in the proof of the Girsanov theorem, and it shows that is a Wiener process, which is used with Tanaka's formula.
