Statement
Let be a standard one-dimensional Brownian motion with , and let be its local time. Let for , for and . Then for every , almost surely, for all , where the integral is an Itô integral.
Remarks
The function is not twice differentiable at , so Itô's lemma does not apply to it directly. Apply Itô's lemma to the convex functions that agree with outside and are quadratic with inside. These functions are only , but Itô's lemma still holds for them, by smoothing further, because is bounded with two jumps. The second-order term is , which tends to as . The value chosen for does not matter, because Brownian motion spends a set of times of Lebesgue measure zero at . Example: taking expectations with gives .

For a student
The formula shows that is a semimartingale: a martingale part plus an increasing part . By Lévy's characterization, the integral is a Brownian motion. Then and the Skorokhod reflection lemma give . This leads to Lévy's identity in law between and , where is the running maximum. The same idea gives the Itô–Tanaka formula for differences of convex functions.
