Definition

Let (Xt)t≥0(X_t)_{t \ge 0} be a real stochastic process. For a partition π={0=t0<t1<⋯<tm=t}\pi = \{0 = t_0 < t_1 < \dots < t_m = t\} of [0,t][0, t], let ∥π∥=max⁡k(tk−tk−1)\norm{\pi} = \max_k (t_k - t_{k-1}) be its mesh. The process XX has quadratic variation ([X]t)t≥0([X]_t)_{t \ge 0} if for every t≥0t \ge 0 [X]t=lim⁡∥π∥→0∑k=1m(Xtk−Xtk−1)2,[X]_t = \lim_{\norm{\pi} \to 0} \sum_{k=1}^{m} \bigl(X_{t_k} - X_{t_{k-1}}\bigr)^2, where the limit is taken in probability over partitions π\pi of [0,t][0, t].

Remarks

A Wiener process WW has [W]t=t[W]_t = t. Check: the sum QπQ_\pi has mean ∑k(tk−tk−1)=t\sum_k (t_k - t_{k-1}) = t and variance 2∑k(tk−tk−1)2≤2t∥π∥2 \sum_k (t_k - t_{k-1})^2 \le 2t \norm{\pi}, so Qπ→tQ_\pi \to t in L2L^2 and hence in probability. A continuously differentiable function ff has [f]t=0[f]_t = 0, because ∑k(f(tk)−f(tk−1))2≤max⁡∣f′∣2 t∥π∥\sum_k (f(t_k) - f(t_{k-1}))^2 \le \max\abs{f'}^2 \, t \norm{\pi}. For fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index H<1/2H < 1/2, the sums over uniform partitions tend to infinity, so the limit does not exist. Every semimartingale has a quadratic variation, given by [X]t=Xt2−X02−2∫0tXs− dXs[X]_t = X_t^2 - X_0^2 - 2 \int_0^t X_{s-} \, dX_s. For a continuous local martingale MM, [M][M] is the unique continuous non-decreasing adapted process with [M]0=0[M]_0 = 0 such that M2−[M]M^2 - [M] is a local martingale.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)
