Lomb–Scargle periodogram
Builds on PeriodogramLeast squaresTime series
Definition
Let , , be observations of a real time series at times . Let be the mean of the . For an angular frequency , choose with . Write and . Assume and . The Lomb–Scargle periodogram at is
Remarks
The condition on is , and it makes . So the two columns and are orthogonal. Then is the drop in the residual sum of squares when is fitted by least squares. does not change when all are shifted by the same amount. Example: for at many well-spread times, has a sharp peak near . Non-example: the squared modulus of the discrete Fourier transform of unevenly sampled data is not the Lomb–Scargle periodogram; it lacks the shift and the normalisations. For evenly spaced and Fourier frequencies, agrees with the classical periodogram up to a constant factor. Many texts divide by the sample variance of the .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
