Definition

Let D⊆ℝD \subseteq \R and let f ⁣:D→ℝf \colon D \to \R be a function. A modulus of continuity is a function ω ⁣:[0,∞)→[0,∞]\omega \colon [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty] that is nondecreasing, satisfies ω(0)=0\omega(0) = 0, and satisfies ω(δ)→0\omega(\delta) \to 0 as δ→0+\delta \to 0^+. The function ω\omega is a modulus of continuity for ff if ∣f(x)−f(y)∣≤ω(∣x−y∣)for all x,y∈D.\abs{f(x) - f(y)} \le \omega(\abs{x - y}) \quad \text{for all } x, y \in D. The optimal modulus of continuity of ff is the function ωf ⁣:[0,∞)→[0,∞]\omega_f \colon [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty] given by ωf(δ)=sup⁡{∣f(x)−f(y)∣:x,y∈D, ∣x−y∣≤δ},\omega_f(\delta) = \sup \set{\abs{f(x) - f(y)} : x, y \in D, \ \abs{x - y} \le \delta}, where the supremum is taken in the extended real line.

Remarks

The function ff has a modulus of continuity if and only if ff is uniformly continuous, and then ωf\omega_f is the smallest one. The same definitions work for a map between metric spaces, with distances in place of ∣x−y∣\abs{x - y} and ∣f(x)−f(y)∣\abs{f(x) - f(y)}.

Example: let f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt x on D=[0,∞)D = [0, \infty). For 0≤y≤x0 \le y \le x, one has x−y≤x−y\sqrt x - \sqrt y \le \sqrt{x - y}, since squaring gives x−2xy+y≤x−yx - 2\sqrt{xy} + y \le x - y, that is y≤xyy \le \sqrt{xy}. Equality holds for y=0y = 0, so ωf(δ)=δ\omega_f(\delta) = \sqrt \delta, and this tends to 00.

Non-example: let f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 on ℝ\R. For δ>0\delta > 0, one has f(x+δ)−f(x)=2xδ+δ2f(x + \delta) - f(x) = 2x\delta + \delta^2, which is unbounded in xx. So ωf(δ)=∞\omega_f(\delta) = \infty for each δ>0\delta > 0, and ωf\omega_f does not tend to 00.

The modulus ω(δ)=Lδ\omega(\delta) = L\delta gives the Lipschitz condition with constant LL. The modulus ω(δ)=Cδα\omega(\delta) = C\delta^\alpha with 0<α≤10 < \alpha \le 1 gives the Hölder condition of exponent α\alpha.
