Definition

Let L/KL/K be an algebraic extension. A normal closure of L/KL/K is a field extension M/LM/L such that:

  1. M/KM/K is a normal extension;
  2. no proper subfield of MM that contains LL is normal over KK.

Remarks

A normal closure exists and is unique up to an isomorphism of fields that is the identity on LL. Let L=K(α1,…,αn)L = K(\alpha_1, \ldots, \alpha_n) be finite over KK, and let fif_i be the minimal polynomial of αi\alpha_i over KK. Then a normal closure is the splitting field of f1⋯fnf_1 \cdots f_n over LL, and it is again finite over KK. Let NN be a normal extension of KK that contains LL. Inside NN, the normal closure is the compositum of the fields τ(L)\tau(L), for all embeddings τ ⁣:L→N\tau \colon L \to N over KK.

Example: for L=ℚ(23)L = \Q(\sqrt[3]{2}) over ℚ\Q, let M=ℚ(23,ω)M = \Q(\sqrt[3]{2}, \omega) with ω=e2πi/3\omega = e^{2\pi i/3}. Check: MM is the splitting field of x3−2x^3 - 2 over ℚ\Q, so it is normal over ℚ\Q. A normal subfield containing 23\sqrt[3]{2} contains all roots 23,ω23,ω223\sqrt[3]{2}, \omega\sqrt[3]{2}, \omega^2\sqrt[3]{2} of its minimal polynomial, hence contains MM.

Non-example: an algebraic closure ℚ‾\overline{\Q} of ℚ\Q contains LL and is normal over ℚ\Q, but it fails clause 2, since MM is a proper normal subfield containing LL.
