Definition

Let (X,Σ,μ)(X, \Sigma, \mu) be a measure space. Let EE be a Banach space over ℝ\R or ℂ\C with dual space E∗E^*. Let f ⁣:X→Ef \colon X \to E be a function such that φ∘f\varphi \circ f is integrable for every φ∈E∗\varphi \in E^*. The function ff is Pettis integrable if for every A∈ΣA \in \Sigma there is a vector xA∈Ex_A \in E with φ(xA)=∫Aφ∘f dμfor every φ∈E∗,\varphi(x_A) = \int_A \varphi \circ f \, d\mu \quad \text{for every } \varphi \in E^*, where the right side is a Lebesgue integral. The vector xAx_A is unique, and it is the Pettis integral ∫Af dμ\int_A f \, d\mu.

Remarks

The vector xAx_A is unique because the continuous linear functionals separate the points of EE, by the Hahn–Banach theorem.

Example: let E=ℝnE = \R^n and let each component fkf_k of ff be integrable. Then xA=(∫Af1 dμ,…,∫Afn dμ)x_A = (\int_A f_1 \, d\mu, \dots, \int_A f_n \, d\mu) works, because every φ∈E∗\varphi \in E^* is a linear combination of the coordinates.

Non-example: let X=ℕX = \N with the counting measure, E=c0E = c_0, the space of sequences tending to 00, and f(n)=enf(n) = e_n, the nn-th unit vector. For each φ∈E∗=ℓ1\varphi \in E^* = \ell^1, the sum ∑n∣φ(en)∣\sum_n \abs{\varphi(e_n)} is finite, so φ∘f\varphi \circ f is integrable. But for A=ℕA = \N the only candidate is the constant sequence (1,1,… )(1, 1, \dots), which is not in c0c_0, so ff is not Pettis integrable.

Every Bochner integrable function is Pettis integrable, with the same integral. In infinite-dimensional spaces the converse fails.
