Proof of the multiplicativity of the Möbius function

Builds on Möbius functionMultiplicative functionSquare-free integerNumber of distinct prime factorsEuclid's lemmaP-adic valuationP-adic valuation of a productCoprime integers

Proof

  1. No prime square divides 11, so 11 is square-free. No prime divides 11, so ω(1)=0\omega(1) = 0, where ω\omega is the number of distinct prime factors. By the definition of the Möbius function, μ(1)=(−1)0=1\mu(1) = (-1)^0 = 1.
  2. Let mm and nn be coprime positive integers.
  3. If mm is not square-free, then q2∣mq^2 \mid m for some prime qq, so q2∣mnq^2 \mid mn. Then μ(m)=0\mu(m) = 0 and μ(mn)=0\mu(mn) = 0, so μ(mn)=μ(m)μ(n)\mu(mn) = \mu(m)\mu(n). The case where nn is not square-free is the same.
  4. Now let mm and nn be square-free. Suppose q2∣mnq^2 \mid mn for a prime qq. By Euclid's lemma, q∣mq \mid m or q∣nq \mid n, and not both, because gcd⁡(m,n)=1\gcd(m, n) = 1. Say q∣mq \mid m and q∤nq \nmid n.
  5. With the p-adic valuation and the valuation of a product, νq(m)=νq(m)+νq(n)=νq(mn)≥2\nu_q(m) = \nu_q(m) + \nu_q(n) = \nu_q(mn) \ge 2. So q2∣mq^2 \mid m, a contradiction. Hence mnmn is square-free.
  6. A prime divides mnmn if and only if it divides mm or nn, by Euclid's lemma. No prime divides both, since gcd⁡(m,n)=1\gcd(m, n) = 1. So ω(mn)=ω(m)+ω(n)\omega(mn) = \omega(m) + \omega(n).
  7. Therefore μ(mn)=(−1)ω(m)+ω(n)=(−1)ω(m)(−1)ω(n)=μ(m)μ(n)\mu(mn) = (-1)^{\omega(m) + \omega(n)} = (-1)^{\omega(m)} (-1)^{\omega(n)} = \mu(m) \mu(n).
  8. With step 1, μ\mu is a multiplicative function.

Idea

A square factor in mm or nn stays in mnmn, so both sides vanish. If mm and nn are square-free and coprime, the primes of mnmn are those of mm together with those of nn, each once. So the signs multiply.
