Proof of the rank inequality for a product of matrices
Builds on Rank of a matrixColumn spaceMatrix multiplicationDimension of a subspaceDimension of the coordinate spaceRow rank equals column rankTranspose of a productTranspose
Proof
We compare column spaces, and then pass to transposes for the second inequality.
- Let be and be . Let be the columns of .
- By the definition of the matrix product, entry of column of is . So column of equals .
- Hence each column of lies in the column space . Since is a subspace, .
- has dimension by the dimension of the coordinate space, so is finite-dimensional by the dimension of a subspace.
- Applying the dimension of a subspace inside gives . By the definition of rank, .
- Step 5 holds for any two matrices whose product is defined.
- By row rank equals column rank, , with the transpose.
- By the transpose of a product, , where is and is .
- By step 6 applied to and , .
- By row rank equals column rank again, . So .
- By steps 5 and 10, .
Idea
Every column of is a combination of columns of , so cannot have a larger column space than . Transposing turns into the left factor, and transposing does not change rank. So the same argument bounds by .
