Proof of the universal property of the tensor product from its construction

Proof
We use the construction of the tensor product. Here has basis the vectors for .
- By the extension from a basis, there is exactly one linear map with for all and .
- Let and . Then , since is linear in its first argument.
- In the same way, maps the three other kinds of generators of to . This uses the additivity of in , and .
- The kernel of is a linear subspace that contains all generators of . So it contains their span .
- By the universal property of the quotient space, there is a linear map with .
- Since is the class , step 5 says . This proves existence.
- For uniqueness, the vectors span . Indeed each element of the quotient space is with , and is a finite combination.
- So , since the quotient map is linear.
- Let be linear with for all . By step 8 and linearity, .
- So , and is the only linear map with the required property.
Idea
A linear map out of may send the basis vectors anywhere, so we send them to . Bilinearity of says exactly that the relations in go to , so the map passes to the quotient. Uniqueness holds because the vectors span the tensor product.
