Proof that the tensor products of basis vectors form a basis
Builds on Tensor product of vector spacesUniversal property of the tensor productBasisSpanning setLinear independenceA linear map is determined by its values on a basisLinear map
Proof
We use the construction of the tensor product, where is the class of the basis vector of .
- The elements of have class . So , , and .
- Each element of is the class of a finite combination . So it is , and the vectors span .
- Let and . Since and are bases, and with finitely many nonzero coefficients.
- By step 1, . With step 2, the family spans .
- For independence, let , with only finitely many . Fix .
- By the extension from a basis, there are linear maps with and with . Here is for equal indices and otherwise.
- The map from to is bilinear, since and are linear.
- By the universal property, there is a linear map with .
- In particular . Applying to the relation of step 5 gives .
- Since was arbitrary, all vanish. So the family is linearly independent.
- By steps 4 and 10, is a basis of .
Idea
Spanning comes from expanding and in their bases and using bilinearity. For independence, the universal property gives a linear functional that reads off one coefficient . It comes from the bilinear map that multiplies the -th coordinate of by the -th coordinate of .
