Proof

We intersect a series of GG with HH.

  1. Since GG is solvable, it has a subnormal series {e}=G0⊴G1⊴⋯⊴Gn=G\{e\} = G_0 \trianglelefteq G_1 \trianglelefteq \cdots \trianglelefteq G_n = G in which each factor Gi/Gi−1G_i/G_{i-1} is abelian.
  2. For 0≤i≤n0 \leq i \leq n, let Hi=H∩GiH_i = H \cap G_i. It is a subgroup of HH, since an intersection of subgroups is a subgroup. Also H0={e}H_0 = \{e\} and Hn=HH_n = H.
  3. Fix ii with 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n. Define φi ⁣:Hi→Gi/Gi−1\varphi_i \colon H_i \to G_i/G_{i-1} by φi(h)=hGi−1\varphi_i(h) = hG_{i-1}. Since h∈Gih \in G_i, this lands in the quotient group Gi/Gi−1G_i/G_{i-1}.
  4. The map φi\varphi_i is a homomorphism, because (hk)Gi−1=(hGi−1)(kGi−1)(hk)G_{i-1} = (hG_{i-1})(kG_{i-1}) for h,k∈Hih, k \in H_i.
  5. Its kernel is {h∈Hi:h∈Gi−1}=H∩Gi−1=Hi−1\{h \in H_i : h \in G_{i-1}\} = H \cap G_{i-1} = H_{i-1}.
  6. The kernel is a normal subgroup of the domain. So Hi−1⊴HiH_{i-1} \trianglelefteq H_i, and {e}=H0⊴⋯⊴Hn=H\{e\} = H_0 \trianglelefteq \cdots \trianglelefteq H_n = H is a subnormal series of HH.
  7. By the first isomorphism theorem, Hi/Hi−1H_i/H_{i-1} is isomorphic to the image of φi\varphi_i, which is a subgroup of Gi/Gi−1G_i/G_{i-1}.
  8. A subgroup of an abelian group is abelian, and a group isomorphic to an abelian group is abelian. So Hi/Hi−1H_i/H_{i-1} is abelian.
  9. So HH has a subnormal series with abelian factors, and HH is solvable.

Idea

Cut the series of GG down to HH by intersecting each term with HH. Each new factor embeds into the old factor at the same place. A subgroup of an abelian group is abelian, so the new factors are abelian too.
