Purely inseparable extension
Builds on Algebraic extensionCharacteristic of a ringMinimal polynomial of an algebraic element
Definition
Let be an algebraic extension. If has characteristic , the extension is purely inseparable if . If has characteristic , the extension is purely inseparable if for every there is an integer with .
Remarks
In characteristic , the following are equivalent for an algebraic extension :
- is purely inseparable;
- the minimal polynomial over of each has the form with and ;
- every element of that is separable over lies in .
Example: let and with . Check: every element of is with , and its -th power is .
Non-example: is not purely inseparable. For , the powers are or its conjugate , and neither lies in .
