Definition

Let KK be a field of characteristic p>0p > 0 and let K‾\overline{K} be an algebraic closure of KK. The perfect closure of KK is the set Kp−∞={α∈K‾:αpn∈K for some integer n≥0}.K^{p^{-\infty}} = \set{\alpha \in \overline{K} : \alpha^{p^n} \in K \text{ for some integer } n \ge 0}. For a field KK of characteristic 00, the perfect closure of KK is KK.

Remarks

The set Kp−∞K^{p^{-\infty}} is a subfield of K‾\overline{K}, because (α+β)pn=αpn+βpn(\alpha + \beta)^{p^n} = \alpha^{p^n} + \beta^{p^n} in characteristic pp. It is a perfect field, it is purely inseparable over KK, and it is contained in every perfect subfield of K‾\overline{K} that contains KK. It is unique up to a unique isomorphism over KK.

Example: for K=𝔽p(t)K = \F_p(t), the perfect closure is ⋃n≥0𝔽p(t1/pn)\bigcup_{n \ge 0} \F_p(t^{1/p^n}). Check: each 𝔽p(t1/pn)\F_p(t^{1/p^n}) is purely inseparable over KK, and the union is perfect because every element of 𝔽p(t1/pn)\F_p(t^{1/p^n}) has a pp-th root in 𝔽p(t1/pn+1)\F_p(t^{1/p^{n+1}}).

Non-example: for pp odd, the field K‾\overline{K} is perfect and contains KK, but it is not the perfect closure. It contains t\sqrt{t}, and no power t pn\sqrt{t}^{\,p^n} lies in KK, since pnp^n is odd.
