Definition
Let be a field. The field is separably closed if every separable polynomial of degree at least has a root in .
Remarks
The following are equivalent for a field :
- is separably closed;
- every separable polynomial in splits into linear factors over ;
- has no separable extension of degree greater than .
Every algebraically closed field is separably closed. A field is algebraically closed if and only if it is separably closed and perfect.
Example: the separable closure of is separably closed but not algebraically closed. Check: the roots of a separable polynomial over are separable over , hence over , so they lie in . But the root of is not separable over .
Non-example: a finite field is not separably closed. The polynomial is separable, since its derivative is , and it has no root in , since for every .
