Definition
Let be a field extension. A separating transcendence basis of is a transcendence basis of such that is a separable algebraic extension of . The extension is separably generated if it has a separating transcendence basis.
Remarks
An algebraic extension is separably generated if and only if it is separable, since then . In characteristic every extension is separably generated. Every finitely generated extension of a perfect field is separably generated. Example: is separably generated, with separating transcendence basis . Non-example: let and ; then is algebraic and purely inseparable of degree , so its only transcendence basis is and is not separable. Not every transcendence basis of a separably generated extension is separating: is a transcendence basis of , but is purely inseparable.
