Definition
Let be a commutative ring with identity and let be its group of units. The determinant vanishes on commutators, so it induces a homomorphism on K1 of a ring. The group is its kernel:
Remarks
Equivalently, , where is the union of the special linear groups and is the elementary subgroup. The map splits , so . Example: for a field , row reduction writes each matrix of determinant as a product of elementary matrices, so . Non-example: the definition needs commutative. For a noncommutative ring such as a division ring there is no determinant with values in ; one uses the Dieudonné determinant or the reduced norm instead. For a central simple algebra over a field , one sets , where is the reduced norm.
