Definition
Let be a field and let and be field extensions of . The tensor product is the tensor product of the -vector spaces and , with the unique -bilinear multiplication such that It is a commutative ring with identity and a -algebra.
Remarks
The maps and embed and into . If is finite and is the minimal polynomial of over , then . If moreover with distinct monic irreducible , the Chinese remainder theorem gives , a product of fields.
Example: . Check: with , and over one has , so .
Non-example: need not be a field, even when and are; has the zero divisors and in the product above.
