Functional analysis Normed and Banach spaces Example
Tsirelson space
Example
Let be the space of real sequences with finitely many nonzero terms. For finite sets , write when . For and a finite set , let be the sequence equal to on and to off . Call finite sets admissible when and . There is exactly one norm on that satisfies where the supremum runs over all and all admissible . The completion of for this norm is the Tsirelson space. It is a Banach space.
Check of two values. For a unit vector , at most one set meets , so the sum is at most , and the equation gives . For , the sets are admissible, so .
Remarks
The unit vectors form an unconditional basis of , and is reflexive. The space contains no subspace isomorphic to or to any sequence space with . Tsirelson built the first space with this property in 1974. The space above, described by Figiel and Johnson, is the dual of Tsirelson's original space. The second check shows how the norm forces blocks far out in the sequence to behave like of their length.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
