Baer's criterion

Builds on Injective moduleModule over a ringIdealLinear mapZorn's lemma

Statement

Let RR be a ring with identity and let EE be a left RR-module. Then EE is an injective module if and only if the following holds. For every left ideal II of RR, every RR-linear map f ⁣:I→Ef \colon I \to E extends to an RR-linear map g ⁣:R→Eg \colon R \to E.

Remarks

The condition says that for every such ff there is e∈Ee \in E with f(a)=aef(a) = ae for all a∈Ia \in I; take e=g(1)e = g(1). One direction is the definition applied to the inclusion I⊆RI \subseteq R. For the other, let M⊆NM \subseteq N and f ⁣:M→Ef \colon M \to E; by Zorn's lemma there is a maximal extension (M′,f′)(M', f') of ff to a submodule M′⊆NM' \subseteq N. If x∈Nx \in N is not in M′M', then I={a∈R:ax∈M′}I = \set{a \in R : ax \in M'} is a left ideal, the map a↦f′(ax)a \mapsto f'(ax) extends to RR by hypothesis, and this extends f′f' to M′+RxM' + Rx, a contradiction; so M′=NM' = N.

Example: over a principal ideal domain RR, a divisible module EE is injective. A nonzero ideal is I=(r)I = (r) with r≠0r \ne 0, and a map f ⁣:I→Ef \colon I \to E is fixed by f(r)f(r); choose ee with re=f(r)re = f(r), then a↦aea \mapsto ae extends ff. For instance ℚ\Q and ℚ/ℤ\Q/\Z are injective ℤ\Z-modules.

For a student

The criterion is the main tool for proving that a given module is injective. Over a principal ideal domain it shows that injective means divisible, which gives the injective ℤ\Z-modules ℚ\Q and ℚ/ℤ\Q/\Z. From this one shows that every module embeds in an injective one, first for abelian groups and then for modules over any ring via Hom⁡ℤ(R,−)\Hom_\Z(R, -). This existence result is what makes injective resolutions, and so right derived functors such as Ext⁡\operatorname{Ext}, available.
