Boolean prime ideal theorem

Builds on Boolean algebraUltrafilterAxiom of choiceZorn's lemma

Statement

Let BB be a Boolean algebra with operations ∧\wedge, ∨\vee, ¬\neg, least element 00 and greatest element 11. An ideal of BB is a set I⊆BI \subseteq B such that 0∈I0 \in I, a∨b∈Ia \vee b \in I for all a,b∈Ia, b \in I, and a∈Ia \in I whenever a≤ba \le b and b∈Ib \in I. An ideal II is prime if 1∉I1 \notin I and, for each a∈Ba \in B, either a∈Ia \in I or ¬a∈I\neg a \in I. Then each ideal II of BB with 1∉I1 \notin I is contained in a prime ideal of BB.

Remarks

In ZFC the proof applies Zorn's lemma to the ideals that contain II and omit 11. A maximal one PP is prime: if a∉Pa \notin P and ¬a∉P\neg a \notin P, then the ideals generated by P∪{a}P \cup \set{a} and by P∪{¬a}P \cup \set{\neg a} both contain 11, and this forces 1∈P1 \in P. The theorem is usually abbreviated BPI. By duality, BPI is equivalent to the ultrafilter lemma: each filter on a set extends to an ultrafilter. Over ZF, BPI follows from the axiom of choice but does not imply it. Over ZF, BPI is equivalent to the compactness theorem of first-order logic and to Stone's representation theorem for Boolean algebras. Example: in the power set Boolean algebra of a set XX, with x∈Xx \in X, the family of subsets of XX that do not contain xx is a prime ideal.

Going deeper

For a student

BPI is the choice principle behind many compactness arguments. It gives the ultrafilter lemma, the compactness theorem of first-order logic, and the representation of every Boolean algebra as an algebra of clopen sets of a Stone space. It also gives Tychonoff's theorem for products of compact Hausdorff spaces, though not for arbitrary compact spaces, which needs full choice. So it sits strictly between ZF and ZFC, and it is a common test of how much choice a theorem really needs.
