Definition

Let KK be a field with an absolute value ∣⋅∣\abs{\cdot}, that is, a normed field, with the metric d(x,y)=∣x−y∣d(x, y) = \abs{x - y}. A completion of (K,∣⋅∣)(K, \abs{\cdot}) is a field K^\widehat{K} with an absolute value ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot}, together with a field homomorphism ι ⁣:K→K^\iota \colon K \to \widehat{K}, such that:

  1. ∥ι(x)∥=∣x∣\norm{\iota(x)} = \abs{x} for all x∈Kx \in K.
  2. K^\widehat{K} is a complete metric space for the metric (a,b)↦∥a−b∥(a, b) \mapsto \norm{a - b}.
  3. The image ι(K)\iota(K) is dense in K^\widehat{K}.

Remarks

A completion exists and is unique up to a unique isomorphism of fields that preserves the absolute values and commutes with the maps from KK. One construction: the Cauchy sequences in KK form a ring under termwise operations. The sequences tending to 00 form a maximal ideal, and the quotient is a field. The absolute value of the class of (xn)(x_n) is lim⁡n∣xn∣\lim_n \abs{x_n}. As a metric space it is the completion of the metric space KK. Example: ℝ\R with the usual absolute value and the inclusion ℚ→ℝ\Q \to \R is a completion of ℚ\Q; clause 3 holds because every real number is a limit of rationals. Example: for a prime pp, the p-adic numbers ℚp\Q_p are the completion of ℚ\Q for the p-adic absolute value. Non-example: the inclusion ℚ→ℂ\Q \to \C satisfies clauses 1 and 2 for the usual absolute values but fails clause 3, since the closure of ℚ\Q in ℂ\C is ℝ\R. For a non-Archimedean absolute value, the completion has the same value group and the same residue field as KK.
