Complex p-adic numbers

Builds on p-adic numberAlgebraic closureCompletion of a valued fieldNon-Archimedean absolute value

Description

Let pp be a prime and let ℚp\Q_p be the field of p-adic numbers with the pp-adic absolute value ∣⋅∣p\abs{\cdot}_p. Let ℚ‾p\overline{\Q}_p be an algebraic closure of ℚp\Q_p. Because ℚp\Q_p is complete, ∣⋅∣p\abs{\cdot}_p extends in exactly one way to an absolute value on ℚ‾p\overline{\Q}_p, and this extension is a non-Archimedean absolute value. The field ℚ‾p\overline{\Q}_p is not complete for it. The field ℂp\C_p of complex pp-adic numbers is the completion of ℚ‾p\overline{\Q}_p for this absolute value.

The field ℂp\C_p is an algebraically closed field and it is complete. The algebraic closedness follows from Krasner's lemma. One approximates a monic polynomial over ℂp\C_p by monic polynomials over ℚ‾p\overline{\Q}_p, whose roots lie in ℚ‾p\overline{\Q}_p. The roots of these approximations can be chosen to form a Cauchy sequence, and its limit in ℂp\C_p is a root of the original polynomial.

Remarks

The set of values ∣x∣p\abs{x}_p for x∈ℂp×x \in \C_p^\times is pℚ={pr:r∈ℚ}p^{\Q} = \set{p^r : r \in \Q}, the same as for ℚ‾p\overline{\Q}_p. The residue field of ℂp\C_p is an algebraic closure of the finite field 𝔽p\F_p. The field ℂp\C_p plays for ℚp\Q_p the role that ℂ\C plays for ℝ\R, but ℂp\C_p has infinite degree over ℚp\Q_p.
