Elsasser number
Builds on MagnetohydrodynamicsCoriolis forceDimensionless numbers in fluid mechanics
Definition
Consider an electrically conducting fluid of density and electrical conductivity , rotating with angular speed , in a magnetic field of typical strength . The Elsasser number is
Remarks
With the magnetic diffusivity , where is the vacuum permeability, the same number is . A flow of speed induces currents of order and so a Lorentz force of order per unit volume. The Coriolis force per unit volume is of order . So estimates the ratio of the two forces, and the speed cancels. Some authors use in place of . Example: for the Earth's core, S/m, kg/m³, s⁻¹ and T give , of order one. It is one of the dimensionless numbers of fluid mechanics used in rotating magnetohydrodynamics.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
