Definition

Let a=(an)n≥0a = (a_n)_{n \ge 0} be a sequence of complex numbers. Let ℓ2=ℓ2({0,1,2,…})\ell^2 = \ell^2(\set{0, 1, 2, \ldots}) be the space of square-summable sequences with standard basis (ek)k≥0(e_k)_{k \ge 0}. The Hankel operator Γa ⁣:ℓ2→ℓ2\Gamma_a \colon \ell^2 \to \ell^2 is the bounded linear operator with the Hankel matrix (aj+k)j,k≥0(a_{j+k})_{j, k \ge 0}, that is, ⟨Γaek,ej⟩=aj+kfor all j,k≥0,\ip{\Gamma_a e_k}{e_j} = a_{j+k} \quad \text{for all } j, k \ge 0, when such a bounded operator exists.

Remarks

Example: the Hilbert matrix, with an=1/(n+1)a_n = 1/(n + 1), defines a bounded Hankel operator; Hilbert's inequality gives ∥Γa∥=π\norm{\Gamma_a} = \pi.

Non-example: the identity matrix is not a Hankel matrix. Its entries at (1,1)(1, 1) and (0,2)(0, 2) have the same index sum 22, but they are 11 and 00.

Nehari's theorem: Γa\Gamma_a is bounded if and only if there is an essentially bounded function ψ\psi on the unit circle with ψ^(n)=an\hat\psi(n) = a_n for all n≥0n \ge 0. Then ∥Γa∥\norm{\Gamma_a} is the least ∥ψ∥∞\norm{\psi}_\infty over such ψ\psi, where ψ^(n)\hat\psi(n) is the nn-th Fourier coefficient. Kronecker's theorem: Γa\Gamma_a has finite rank if and only if the power series ∑n≥0anzn\sum_{n \ge 0} a_n z^n is a rational function. In the function form, for a bounded symbol φ\varphi on the circle, the Hankel operator is Hφf=(I−P)(φf)H_\varphi f = (I - P)(\varphi f) from H2H^2 to L2⊖H2L^2 \ominus H^2, with PP the orthogonal projection onto H2H^2.
