Definition

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or ℂ\C, let ω\omega be the space of all sequences in 𝕂\mathbb{K}, and let X⊆ωX \subseteq \omega be a sequence space. The α\alpha-dual of XX is Xα={a∈ω:∑n∣anxn∣<∞ for every x∈X}.X^\alpha = \set{a \in \omega : \textstyle\sum_{n} \abs{a_n x_n} < \infty \text{ for every } x \in X}. The β\beta-dual of XX is Xβ={a∈ω:∑nanxn converges for every x∈X}.X^\beta = \set{a \in \omega : \textstyle\sum_{n} a_n x_n \text{ converges for every } x \in X}. The α\alpha-dual is called the Köthe–Toeplitz dual of XX, and the β\beta-dual is also called the generalized Köthe–Toeplitz dual.

Remarks

Both duals are sequence spaces, and Xα⊆XβX^\alpha \subseteq X^\beta because absolutely convergent series converge. If X⊆YX \subseteq Y, then Yα⊆XαY^\alpha \subseteq X^\alpha and Yβ⊆XβY^\beta \subseteq X^\beta.

Example: (ℓ1)α=(ℓ1)β=ℓ∞(\ell^1)^\alpha = (\ell^1)^\beta = \ell^\infty, with ℓ1\ell^1 and ℓ∞\ell^\infty as in the spaces ℓ^p. If aa is bounded, then ∑∣anxn∣≤sup⁡n∣an∣∑∣xn∣\sum \abs{a_n x_n} \le \sup_n \abs{a_n} \sum \abs{x_n} for every x∈ℓ1x \in \ell^1. If aa is unbounded, choose indices n1<n2<⋯n_1 < n_2 < \cdots with ∣ank∣≥k2\abs{a_{n_k}} \ge k^2, and let xnk=ank‾/∣ank∣⋅k−2x_{n_k} = \overline{a_{n_k}} / \abs{a_{n_k}} \cdot k^{-2} and xn=0x_n = 0 otherwise. Then x∈ℓ1x \in \ell^1, but the terms ankxnk=∣ank∣k−2≥1a_{n_k} x_{n_k} = \abs{a_{n_k}} k^{-2} \ge 1 do not tend to 00, so a∉(ℓ1)βa \notin (\ell^1)^\beta.

Non-example: a=(n)n≥1a = (n)_{n \ge 1} is not in (ℓ1)β(\ell^1)^\beta; for xn=1/n2x_n = 1/n^2 the series ∑anxn=∑1/n\sum a_n x_n = \sum 1/n diverges.

Other standard values: ωβ\omega^\beta is the space φ\varphi of sequences with finitely many nonzero terms, φβ=ω\varphi^\beta = \omega, and (c0)β=(ℓ∞)β=ℓ1(c_0)^\beta = (\ell^\infty)^\beta = \ell^1.
