Munk's wind-driven circulation model
Builds on Sverdrup balanceStommel's model of western intensificationBeta planeStream functionViscosity
Definition
Consider a homogeneous ocean of constant depth and density in a bounded basin of a beta plane with . Let be the stream function of the depth-averaged velocity, and . Let be the wind stress on the surface and a lateral eddy viscosity. Munk's model is the boundary value problem with on (no flow through the coast) and on (no slip). The length is the Munk boundary layer width.
Remarks
Example: in a boundary layer at a western wall , the equation reduces to . Its exponential solutions satisfy , so . The two roots with negative real part give decaying solutions and , enough to meet both boundary conditions at the western wall. At an eastern wall only one decaying root is available, so the eastern layer is weaker and cannot carry the return flow.
Non-example: Stommel's model has bottom friction instead of lateral friction . It is a second-order problem, it takes only the condition , and its boundary layer has width .
Away from the boundaries the friction term is small, and follows the Sverdrup balance. With free-slip walls, the condition is replaced by .
