Proof
We apply Zorn's lemma to a set of chains ordered by inclusion.
- Let be a partially ordered set and let be a chain of .
- Let be the set of chains of with . Order by inclusion , which is a partial order. The set is nonempty, since .
- Let be a chain of . If is empty, then is an upper bound of in .
- Let be nonempty, and let be the union of its members. Then .
- The set is a chain of . Let , with and for some . Since is a chain, or .
- So and lie in the larger of and , which is a chain of . Hence or .
- So , and for each . Thus is an upper bound of in .
- By steps 2 to 7, Zorn's lemma applies to . It gives a maximal element of .
- Then is a chain with . Suppose that is a chain of with .
- Then , so , and contradicts the maximality of in .
- So is a maximal chain of that contains .
Idea
Chains that contain , ordered by inclusion, satisfy the hypothesis of Zorn's lemma: a nested family of chains has a union that is again a chain. A maximal element of this family is a chain that cannot be enlarged, which is exactly a maximal chain.
