Proof of the irrationality of square roots of non-squares
Builds on Fundamental theorem of arithmeticIrrational number
Proof
- Suppose first that is a perfect square, say with an integer. Then is rational, so it is not irrational.
- Now suppose that is not a perfect square. Then , since and . We argue by contradiction.
- Assume with integers and , . Since , we may take and .
- Squaring gives .
- For a prime and a positive integer , let be the exponent of in the prime factorization of . It is well defined by the fundamental theorem of arithmetic.
- Uniqueness of factorization gives for positive integers and : concatenating factorizations of and gives the factorization of .
- By steps 4 and 6, for each prime . So is even.
- Put , a natural number, and , a finite product over the primes dividing .
- Then , so is a perfect square. This contradicts step 2.
- So is irrational when is not a perfect square. With step 1, is irrational if and only if is not a perfect square.
Idea
If , then . In and in every prime appears to an even power, so the same holds in , and then is a square.
