Definition

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or ℂ\C, and let XX be a Banach space over 𝕂\mathbb{K} with norm ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot}. A sequence (en)n≥1(e_n)_{n \ge 1} in XX is a Schauder basis of XX if the following holds. For every x∈Xx \in X there is a unique sequence (αn)n≥1(\alpha_n)_{n \ge 1} in 𝕂\mathbb{K} such that lim⁡N→∞∥x−∑n=1Nαnen∥=0,\lim_{N \to \infty} \norm{x - \sum_{n=1}^{N} \alpha_n e_n} = 0, that is, the series ∑nαnen\sum_n \alpha_n e_n converges to xx in XX.

Remarks

Example: in ℓp\ell^p with 1≤p<∞1 \le p < \infty, see spaces ℓ^p, the unit vectors ene_n (with 11 in place nn and 00 elsewhere) form a Schauder basis. For x∈ℓpx \in \ell^p and αn=xn\alpha_n = x_n, one has ∥x−∑n≤Nxnen∥p=(∑n>N∣xn∣p)1/p→0\norm{x - \sum_{n \le N} x_n e_n}_p = \left( \sum_{n > N} \abs{x_n}^p \right)^{1/p} \to 0. The coefficients are unique, because a norm-convergent series converges coordinatewise, so the nn-th coordinate of ∑kαkek\sum_k \alpha_k e_k is αn\alpha_n.

Non-example: in ℓ∞\ell^\infty the unit vectors are not a Schauder basis. For x=(1,1,1,… )x = (1, 1, 1, \dots) the only possible coefficients are αn=1\alpha_n = 1, and ∥x−∑n≤Nen∥∞=1\norm{x - \sum_{n \le N} e_n}_\infty = 1 for every NN. In fact ℓ∞\ell^\infty has no Schauder basis at all, because it is not separable.

The order of the basis matters, since the series need not converge after a rearrangement. A Schauder basis of an infinite-dimensional Banach space is never a Hamel basis. The coefficient functionals x↦αnx \mapsto \alpha_n are always continuous.
