Separable closure

Builds on Algebraic extensionSeparable extensionAlgebraic closureMinimal polynomial of an algebraic element

Definition

Let L/KL/K be an algebraic extension. An element α∈L\alpha \in L is separable over KK if its minimal polynomial over KK has no repeated root in an algebraic closure. The separable closure of KK in LL is the set LsL_s of elements of LL that are separable over KK. Let K‾\overline{K} be an algebraic closure of KK. The separable closure of KK is the separable closure KsepK^{\mathrm{sep}} of KK in K‾\overline{K}.

Remarks

The set LsL_s is a subfield of LL containing KK, the extension Ls/KL_s/K is separable, and every separable subextension of L/KL/K lies in LsL_s. The extension L/LsL/L_s is purely inseparable. The field KsepK^{\mathrm{sep}} is separably closed, and it is unique up to an isomorphism over KK.

Example: let K=ℚK = \Q and L=ℚ‾L = \overline{\Q}. Check: in characteristic 00 every irreducible polynomial has distinct roots, so every element of ℚ‾\overline{\Q} is separable and ℚsep=ℚ‾\Q^{\mathrm{sep}} = \overline{\Q}.

Non-example: let K=𝔽p(t)K = \F_p(t) and L=K(s)L = K(s) with sp=ts^p = t. The element ss is not in the separable closure of KK in LL, since its minimal polynomial xp−t=(x−s)px^p - t = (x - s)^p has a repeated root; in fact Ls=KL_s = K.
