Example

Let G=SO(3)G = \mathrm{SO}(3) (rotation group) act on the unit sphere S2⊂ℝ3S^2 \subset \R^3, and let σ\sigma be the rotation-invariant surface measure. The stabilizer of the north pole e3e_3 is the subgroup K≅SO(2)K \cong \mathrm{SO}(2) of rotations about the zz-axis, so S2=G/KS^2 = G / K. The group acts unitarily on L2(S2,σ)L^2(S^2, \sigma) by (gf)(x)=f(g−1x)(g f)(x) = f(g^{-1} x).

For ℓ≥0\ell \ge 0, let ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell be the space of restrictions to S2S^2 of harmonic polynomials on ℝ3\R^3 that are homogeneous of degree ℓ\ell. Its elements are the spherical harmonics of degree ℓ\ell. Then:

  1. dim⁡ℋℓ=2ℓ+1\dim \mathcal{H}_\ell = 2\ell + 1, and ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell is invariant under GG.
  2. Each ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell is an irreducible representation of GG, and the ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell are pairwise non-isomorphic. Every irreducible continuous representation of SO(3)\mathrm{SO}(3) is isomorphic to one of them.
  3. L2(S2)=⨁^ℓ≥0ℋℓL^2(S^2) = \widehat{\bigoplus}_{\ell \ge 0} \mathcal{H}_\ell, an orthogonal Hilbert direct sum.
  4. The spherical Laplacian acts on ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell as multiplication by −ℓ(ℓ+1)-\ell(\ell + 1).

A check of the multiplicity one in 3: the functions in ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell fixed by KK form a line. This line is spanned by the zonal harmonic x↦Pℓ(x3)x \mapsto P_\ell(x_3), where PℓP_\ell is the Legendre polynomial. For example, for ℓ=1\ell = 1 the space ℋ1\mathcal{H}_1 is spanned by x1,x2,x3x_1, x_2, x_3, and it is the standard representation of SO(3)\mathrm{SO}(3) on ℂ3\C^3. Its KK-fixed line is spanned by x3=P1(x3)x_3 = P_1(x_3). The spherical functions of the pair (SO(3),SO(2))(\mathrm{SO}(3), \mathrm{SO}(2)) are g↦Pℓ(⟨ge3,e3⟩)g \mapsto P_\ell(\ip{g e_3}{e_3}), one for each ℓ\ell.
