Spin network
Definition
For , let be the irreducible representation of of dimension (see representation theory of SU(2)). An () spin network is a triple where:
- is a finite oriented graph, possibly with loops and multiple edges;
- assigns to each edge a spin ;
- assigns to each vertex an intertwiner , that is, an -invariant vector of .
In loop quantum gravity, is embedded in a three-manifold . The spin network then defines the function of a connection . Here is the holonomy of along , is the representation on , and means contracting all indices.
Remarks
Example: let be one edge that is a closed loop, with a two-valent vertex and the identity of , an invariant element of . Then , the Wilson loop of in spin . Non-example: a trivalent vertex with three edges of spin admits no nonzero intertwiner. Indeed contains no copy of . In general, three spins at a trivalent vertex must satisfy the triangle inequalities and have an integer sum. Spin network states on embedded graphs, with orthonormal intertwiners at the vertices, form an orthonormal basis of the gauge-invariant Hilbert space of loop quantum gravity.
