Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let 𝒫n\mathcal{P}_n be the Pauli group on nn qubits: the operators ikσ1⊗⋯⊗σni^k \sigma_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_n with k∈{0,1,2,3}k \in \set{0, 1, 2, 3} and each σj∈{I,X,Y,Z}\sigma_j \in \set{I, X, Y, Z}, the Pauli matrices. Let SS be an abelian subgroup of 𝒫n\mathcal{P}_n with −I∉S-I \notin S. The stabilizer code of SS is the subspace VS={ψ∈(ℂ2)⊗n:gψ=ψ for all g∈S}.V_S = \set{\psi \in (\C^2)^{\otimes n} : g \psi = \psi \text{ for all } g \in S}. The group SS is its stabilizer. If SS is generated by n−kn - k independent elements, then dim⁡VS=2k\dim V_S = 2^k, and VSV_S is an [ ⁣[n,k] ⁣][\![n, k]\!] code.

Remarks

The weight of a Pauli operator is the number of tensor factors different from II. Consider the Pauli operators that commute with every element of SS but do not lie in SS, even up to a phase. The distance dd is the least weight of such an operator; one then writes [ ⁣[n,k,d] ⁣][\![n, k, d]\!]. Such a code corrects arbitrary errors on any ⌊(d−1)/2⌋\lfloor (d-1)/2 \rfloor qubits.

Example: n=3n = 3 and S={I,Z1Z2,Z2Z3,Z1Z3}S = \set{I, Z_1 Z_2, Z_2 Z_3, Z_1 Z_3}, generated by Z1Z2Z_1 Z_2 and Z2Z3Z_2 Z_3. The group is abelian since all elements are diagonal, and −I∉S-I \notin S. A basis state ∣x1x2x3⟩\lvert x_1 x_2 x_3 \rangle is fixed by Z1Z2Z_1 Z_2 and Z2Z3Z_2 Z_3 exactly when x1=x2=x3x_1 = x_2 = x_3, so VS=span⁡{∣000⟩,∣111⟩}V_S = \operatorname{span}\set{\lvert 000 \rangle, \lvert 111 \rangle}, of dimension 23−2=22^{3-2} = 2. Its distance is 11, because Z1Z_1 commutes with SS but is not in SS; it corrects bit flips only.

Non-example: S={±I,±Z1}S = \set{\pm I, \pm Z_1} contains −I-I, and then VS={0}V_S = \set{0}, since −Iψ=ψ-I \psi = \psi forces ψ=0\psi = 0. Similarly, a group containing X1X_1 and Z1Z_1 is not abelian, and these two operators have no common +1+1 eigenvector.

Standard examples are the five-qubit code [ ⁣[5,1,3] ⁣][\![5, 1, 3]\!], the Steane code [ ⁣[7,1,3] ⁣][\![7, 1, 3]\!] and the Shor code [ ⁣[9,1,3] ⁣][\![9, 1, 3]\!].
