Example

A two-state quantum system has the state space ℂ2\C^2, and its Hamiltonian is a 2×22 \times 2 Hermitian matrix HH. Every such matrix can be written H=aI+b1σx+b2σy+b3σzH = a I + b_1 \sigma_x + b_2 \sigma_y + b_3 \sigma_z with a∈ℝa \in \R and b=(b1,b2,b3)∈ℝ3b = (b_1, b_2, b_3) \in \R^3, where σx,σy,σz\sigma_x, \sigma_y, \sigma_z are the Pauli matrices. Since (b1σx+b2σy+b3σz)2=∣b∣2I(b_1\sigma_x + b_2\sigma_y + b_3\sigma_z)^2 = \abs{b}^2 I, the eigenvalues of HH are a±∣b∣a \pm \abs{b}.

Rabi oscillation: let Ω>0\Omega > 0 and H=ℏΩ2σxH = \frac{\hbar\Omega}{2} \sigma_x, and start in the state e0=(1,0)e_0 = (1, 0). Because σx2=I\sigma_x^2 = I, the evolution operator is e−iHt/ℏ=cos⁡(Ωt/2)I−isin⁡(Ωt/2)σxe^{-iHt/\hbar} = \cos(\Omega t/2) I - i \sin(\Omega t/2) \sigma_x. So the state at time tt is cos⁡(Ωt/2)e0−isin⁡(Ωt/2)e1\cos(\Omega t/2) e_0 - i \sin(\Omega t/2) e_1 with e1=(0,1)e_1 = (0, 1). The probability of finding the system in e1e_1 is sin⁡2(Ωt/2)\sin^2(\Omega t/2), which swings between 00 and 11.
