Field theory and polynomials Definition
Abelian extension
Definition
Let be a Galois extension with Galois group . The extension is abelian if is an abelian group.
Remarks
Example: is Galois of degree . Its Galois group consists of the four maps , , which commute, so the extension is abelian. Non-example: the splitting field of , with , is Galois over . Its Galois group permutes the three roots of in all six ways, so it is isomorphic to , which is not abelian. Every subextension of a finite abelian extension is abelian, because every subgroup of an abelian group is normal and every quotient is abelian.
