Description

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let U(2n)U(2^n) be the unitary group on (ℂ2)⊗n(\C^2)^{\otimes n}, and let 𝒫n\mathcal{P}_n be the Pauli group on nn qubits. The Clifford group on nn qubits is the normalizer of 𝒫n\mathcal{P}_n in U(2n)U(2^n): 𝒞n={U∈U(2n):UPU∗∈𝒫n for all P∈𝒫n}.\mathcal{C}_n = \set{ U \in U(2^n) : U P U^* \in \mathcal{P}_n \text{ for all } P \in \mathcal{P}_n }. It is a group under matrix multiplication.

Remarks

The Clifford group contains all scalar matrices eiθIe^{i\theta} I, so it is infinite; one often works modulo these phases. Up to phases, it is generated by the Hadamard gate, the phase gate and the controlled-NOT gate: H=12(111−1),S=(100i),CNOT=∣0⟩⟨0∣⊗I+∣1⟩⟨1∣⊗X.H = \frac{1}{\sqrt2}\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 1 & -1 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad S = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & i \end{pmatrix}, \qquad \mathrm{CNOT} = |0\rangle\langle 0| \otimes I + |1\rangle\langle 1| \otimes X. Here HH and SS act on any one qubit, and CNOT acts on any ordered pair of qubits. For example, HH is a Clifford element: HXH=ZHXH = Z, HZH=XHZH = X and HYH=−YHYH = -Y, where X,Y,ZX, Y, Z are the Pauli matrices. Similarly SXS∗=YSXS^* = Y and SZS∗=ZSZS^* = Z.

The TT gate diag(1,eiπ/4)\mathrm{diag}(1, e^{i\pi/4}) is not a Clifford element, since TXT∗=(X+Y)/2TXT^* = (X + Y)/\sqrt2 is not in 𝒫1\mathcal{P}_1.

Conjugation by elements of 𝒞n\mathcal{C}_n induces symplectic maps on the quotient 𝒫n/{±I,±iI}≅𝔽22n\mathcal{P}_n / \set{\pm I, \pm iI} \cong \F_2^{2n}, which carries the symplectic form of the Pauli group. Let NN be the subgroup of 𝒞n\mathcal{C}_n generated by 𝒫n\mathcal{P}_n and the phases. This gives an isomorphism of the quotient 𝒞n/N\mathcal{C}_n / N onto the symplectic group Sp(2n,𝔽2)Sp(2n, \F_2). Here 𝔽2\F_2 is the field with two elements.

Circuits built from Clifford gates acting on computational basis states can be simulated efficiently on a classical computer. Adding any non-Clifford gate, such as TT, gives a universal gate set.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
