GHZ state
Builds on Tensor product of Hilbert spacesQuantum entanglementPauli matricesHidden-variable theory
Example
Let be the standard basis of . The GHZ state of three qubits is the unit vector in the tensor product . It is entangled. Indeed, a product vector has coefficients , so . For the left side is and the right side is . With the Pauli matrices and , one checks . Since and , also .
Remarks
These four eigenvalue equations give the GHZ argument against local hidden-variable theories. Suppose each qubit carries predetermined values for the measurements of and . The last three equations force . Multiplying them gives , since each . The first equation forces , a contradiction without any inequality. For qubits the GHZ state is . Tracing out one qubit of the three-qubit GHZ state leaves a separable mixed state, so its entanglement is destroyed by losing one particle.
