Example
The Lagrange top is a heavy rigid body turning about a fixed point in a uniform gravitational field. It is symmetric about an axis through . In the principal body frame at , its moments of inertia are and , and its centre of mass is at with . Let be its mass, the gravitational acceleration, the angular velocity and the upward unit vertical, both in the body frame. The motion is given by the Euler–Poisson equations where .
It is an integrable system on the -dimensional phase space of the heavy top, with three integrals in involution:
- the energy ;
- the vertical component of the angular momentum ;
- the spin about the symmetry axis.
The check for the third: the third component of is , and the third component of is , so .
Remarks
With the three integrals, the cosine of the angle between the axis and the vertical satisfies for a polynomial of degree . So oscillates between two roots of : the symmetry axis turns about the vertical, which is precession, while its tilt oscillates between two values, which is nutation. The motion is solved by elliptic functions.
