Definition
Let be a finite extension and let be the field trace. The trace form of is the map
Remarks
Since is -linear and multiplication is commutative and distributive, is a symmetric bilinear form on the -vector space . It is nondegenerate if and only if is separable. Its quadratic form is .
Example: over . Check: , so ; in the basis the matrix of is , which is invertible.
Non-example of nondegeneracy: let and with . The trace of every element of is , so the trace form of is identically zero and degenerate, as expected for an inseparable extension.
