Weyl equation

Builds on Pauli matricesDirac equation

Definition

Use units with c=ℏ=1c = \hbar = 1 and coordinates (t,𝐱)βˆˆβ„Γ—β„3(t, \mathbf{x}) \in \R \times \R^3. Let Οƒ1,Οƒ2,Οƒ3\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \sigma_3 be the Pauli matrices and write πˆβ‹…βˆ‡=βˆ‘k=13Οƒkβ€‰βˆ‚/βˆ‚xk\boldsymbol{\sigma} \cdot \nabla = \sum_{k=1}^3 \sigma_k\, \partial / \partial x_k. The Weyl equations for a function Οˆβ€‰β£:ℝ×ℝ3β†’β„‚2\psi \colon \R \times \R^3 \to \C^2 are βˆ‚Οˆβˆ‚t+πˆβ‹…βˆ‡Οˆ=0andβˆ‚Οˆβˆ‚tβˆ’πˆβ‹…βˆ‡Οˆ=0.\frac{\partial \psi}{\partial t} + \boldsymbol{\sigma} \cdot \nabla \psi = 0 \qquad \text{and} \qquad \frac{\partial \psi}{\partial t} - \boldsymbol{\sigma} \cdot \nabla \psi = 0. With σμ=(I2,Οƒ1,Οƒ2,Οƒ3)\sigma^\mu = (I_2, \sigma_1, \sigma_2, \sigma_3) and ΟƒΛ‰ΞΌ=(I2,βˆ’Οƒ1,βˆ’Οƒ2,βˆ’Οƒ3)\bar\sigma^\mu = (I_2, -\sigma_1, -\sigma_2, -\sigma_3), they read ΟƒΞΌβˆ‚ΞΌΟˆ=0\sigma^\mu \partial_\mu \psi = 0 and ΟƒΛ‰ΞΌβˆ‚ΞΌΟˆ=0\bar\sigma^\mu \partial_\mu \psi = 0.

Remarks

Since (πˆβ‹…βˆ‡)2=Ξ”(\boldsymbol{\sigma} \cdot \nabla)^2 = \Delta, one has (βˆ‚tβˆ’πˆβ‹…βˆ‡)(βˆ‚t+πˆβ‹…βˆ‡)=βˆ‚t2βˆ’Ξ”(\partial_t - \boldsymbol{\sigma}\cdot\nabla)(\partial_t + \boldsymbol{\sigma}\cdot\nabla) = \partial_t^2 - \Delta, so every component of a solution of either equation solves the wave equation.

Example: let π©βˆˆβ„3βˆ–{0}\mathbf{p} \in \R^3 \setminus \set{0} and let uβˆˆβ„‚2u \in \C^2 be an eigenvector of πˆβ‹…π©\boldsymbol{\sigma} \cdot \mathbf{p} with eigenvalue ∣𝐩∣\abs{\mathbf{p}}. Then ψ=u eβˆ’i(∣𝐩∣tβˆ’π©β‹…π±)\psi = u\, e^{-i(\abs{\mathbf{p}} t - \mathbf{p}\cdot\mathbf{x})} satisfies βˆ‚tψ+πˆβ‹…βˆ‡Οˆ=(βˆ’i∣𝐩∣+iβ€‰πˆβ‹…π©)ψ=0\partial_t \psi + \boldsymbol{\sigma}\cdot\nabla\psi = \left(-i\abs{\mathbf{p}} + i\, \boldsymbol{\sigma}\cdot\mathbf{p}\right)\psi = 0. It is a positive-energy solution of the first equation whose spin points along 𝐩\mathbf{p}.

Non-example: if uu is instead the eigenvector of πˆβ‹…π©\boldsymbol{\sigma}\cdot\mathbf{p} with eigenvalue βˆ’βˆ£π©βˆ£-\abs{\mathbf{p}}, then ψ=u eβˆ’i(∣𝐩∣tβˆ’π©β‹…π±)\psi = u\, e^{-i(\abs{\mathbf{p}} t - \mathbf{p}\cdot\mathbf{x})} still solves the wave equation, but βˆ‚tψ+πˆβ‹…βˆ‡Οˆ=βˆ’2iβˆ£π©βˆ£Οˆβ‰ 0\partial_t\psi + \boldsymbol{\sigma}\cdot\nabla\psi = -2i\abs{\mathbf{p}}\psi \ne 0; it solves the second Weyl equation instead.

Which of the two equations is called right-handed and which left-handed depends on conventions. In the Weyl representation of the gamma matrices, the Dirac equation with mass m=0m = 0 decouples into the two Weyl equations for the upper and lower pairs of components.
