Definition
Let be a metric space, for example a subset of . Let be the first uncountable ordinal. For each ordinal , define a set of functions as follows.
- is the set of continuous functions .
- For , is the set of functions that are pointwise limits of sequences in .
A function of Baire class is an element of . A Baire function is a function that lies in for some .
Remarks
The classes increase: for , since a function is the limit of a constant sequence. The set of Baire functions is the smallest set of functions that contains the continuous functions and is closed under pointwise limits of sequences. For , the Baire functions are exactly the functions that are measurable for the Borel sigma-algebra.
Example: if is differentiable, then is of Baire class . Indeed , and each function on the right is continuous.
Non-example: the Dirichlet function is not of Baire class . A function of Baire class on is continuous at the points of a dense set, while is continuous nowhere. It is of Baire class , since .
