Definition

Assume ZFC, so that each set has a cardinal number and 2κ2^\kappa is the cardinality of the power set of a set of cardinality κ\kappa. The beth numbers ℶα\beth_\alpha, for ordinals α\alpha, are defined by transfinite recursion:

  1. ℶ0=ℵ0\beth_0 = \aleph_0, the cardinality of ℕ\N, see aleph-null.
  2. ℶα+1=2ℶα\beth_{\alpha + 1} = 2^{\beth_\alpha}.
  3. ℶλ=sup⁡β<λℶβ\beth_\lambda = \sup_{\beta < \lambda} \beth_\beta for each nonzero limit ordinal λ\lambda, the supremum of the earlier beths.

Remarks

Example: ℶ1=2ℵ0\beth_1 = 2^{\aleph_0} is the cardinality of ℝ\R, since ℝ\R is in bijection with the power set of ℕ\N. ℶ2=22ℵ0\beth_2 = 2^{2^{\aleph_0}} is the cardinality of the power set of ℝ\R, and also of the set of all functions ℝ→ℝ\R \to \R. Non-example: ℵ1\aleph_1 is a beth number only if ℵ1=ℶ1\aleph_1 = \beth_1, which is the continuum hypothesis and is not provable in ZFC. By Cantor's theorem ℶα+1>ℶα\beth_{\alpha+1} > \beth_\alpha, and by induction ℶα≥ℵα\beth_\alpha \ge \aleph_\alpha for every α\alpha. Another notation is ℶα=ℶα(ℵ0)\beth_\alpha = \beth_\alpha(\aleph_0); more generally ℶ0(κ)=κ\beth_0(\kappa) = \kappa and ℶα+1(κ)=2ℶα(κ)\beth_{\alpha+1}(\kappa) = 2^{\beth_\alpha(\kappa)}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
