Definition

Let kk be a field and let ksk^s be a separable closure of kk. Let G=Gal⁡(ks/k)G = \Gal(k^s/k) be the absolute Galois group with its Krull topology. A finite étale kk-algebra is a kk-algebra isomorphic to a finite product L1×⋯×LrL_1 \times \cdots \times L_r. Here each LiL_i is a finite separable extension of kk. For such an algebra AA, let F(A)=Hom⁡k(A,ks)F(A) = \Hom_k(A, k^s) be the set of kk-algebra homomorphisms A→ksA \to k^s, with the action g⋅φ=g∘φg \cdot \varphi = g \circ \varphi of GG. Let ℰk\mathcal{E}_k be the category of finite étale kk-algebras, and let 𝒮G\mathcal{S}_G be the category of finite sets with a continuous action of GG. Grothendieck's Galois theory for kk is the statement that F ⁣:ℰk→𝒮GF \colon \mathcal{E}_k \to \mathcal{S}_G is an anti-equivalence of categories.

Remarks

Under FF, the dimension dim⁡kA\dim_k A equals the number of elements of F(A)F(A). A field LL goes to a transitive GG-set, and a product of algebras goes to a disjoint union of GG-sets. For k=ℝk = \R, the group GG has order 22, and F(ℂ)F(\C) is a set of two points swapped by GG, while F(ℝ×ℝ)F(\R \times \R) is a set of two fixed points. The algebra k[x]/(x2)k[x]/(x^2) is not finite étale, because it has a nonzero nilpotent element, and no product of fields has one. The general form uses a Galois category with a fibre functor; for a connected scheme it defines the étale fundamental group, and for Spec⁡k\operatorname{Spec} k this group is GG.
