Proof
We use Zorn's lemma. We write the proof for left ideals. For two-sided ideals, read "two-sided ideal" for "left ideal" throughout; step 6 explains the one extra check.
- Let be a ring and let be a left ideal of with .
- A left ideal of equals if and only if . Indeed, if , then for every .
- Let be the set of left ideals of with and . Inclusion is a partial order on . The set is nonempty, since .
- Let be a chain. If is empty, then is an upper bound of in . So assume that is nonempty, and let be the union of the members of .
- The set is a left ideal. It contains , since some exists and . Let , say and with . Since is a chain, we may assume . Then . For , .
- In the two-sided case, also for and . So is then a two-sided ideal.
- Every member of contains , so . No member contains by step 2, so , and .
- So , and contains each member of . Thus every chain in has an upper bound in .
- By Zorn's lemma, has a maximal element . Then is a left ideal with and .
- Let be a left ideal of with and . Then , so . By the maximality of in , .
- So every left ideal satisfies or . Hence is a maximal ideal of that contains .
- Now let be a nonzero ring, so . The set is an ideal, and since . Steps 1 to 11 with give a maximal ideal of .
Idea
A proper ideal is one that avoids . A union of a chain of ideals that avoid is again an ideal that avoids . So Zorn's lemma applies and gives a proper ideal containing that cannot be enlarged without reaching the whole ring.
