Proof
We use Zorn's lemma to get a maximal acyclic set of edges. For a finite graph, simply take an acyclic edge set of largest size instead.
- Let . Let be the set of all such that the subgraph is acyclic. Order by inclusion.
- , because a cycle has positive length and so uses an edge. So is nonempty.
- Let be a nonempty chain in , and let . Suppose has a cycle with edges .
- Each lies in some . Since is a chain, the largest of contains all .
- Then the cycle lies in for that , a contradiction. So , and is an upper bound of . The empty chain has the upper bound .
- By Zorn's lemma, has a maximal element . Let . It is acyclic, and it contains every vertex of .
- Suppose is not connected. Since is nonempty, there are such that is not reachable from in .
- Since is connected, there is a walk from to in .
- If were reachable from in for each , then would be reachable from in , by transitivity of reachability. So some has not reachable from in .
- Let and . Then , and , since otherwise would be a walk in .
- Let . Suppose has a cycle . Since is acyclic, one of its edges is , say .
- The edges of a cycle are pairwise distinct. So all other edges of the cycle lie in .
- Then is a walk in from to , using . For it is .
- The ends of this walk are and . Reachability is symmetric, so is reachable from in . This contradicts step 9. Hence .
- But , which contradicts the maximality of . So is connected.
- By steps 6 and 15, is a connected acyclic subgraph of with all the vertices of . So is a tree, and it is a spanning tree of .
Idea
Keep as many edges as possible without making a cycle. If the result were disconnected, some edge of would join two of its pieces. Adding that edge cannot close a cycle, so the set was not as large as possible.
