Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1. A bump function on ℝn\R^n is a function φ ⁣:ℝn→ℝ\varphi \colon \R^n \to \R such that:

  1. φ\varphi is smooth, that is, of class C∞C^\infty;
  2. the support {x∈ℝn:φ(x)≠0}‾\overline{\set{x \in \R^n : \varphi(x) \ne 0}} of φ\varphi is compact.

The set of bump functions on ℝn\R^n is often written Cc∞(ℝn)C_c^\infty(\R^n).

Remarks

Example: let ψ(x)=e−1/(1−x2)\psi(x) = e^{-1/(1 - x^2)} for ∣x∣<1\abs{x} < 1 and ψ(x)=0\psi(x) = 0 for ∣x∣≥1\abs{x} \ge 1. Let g(t)=e−1/tg(t) = e^{-1/t} for t>0t > 0 and g(t)=0g(t) = 0 for t≤0t \le 0, which is smooth. Then ψ(x)=g(1−x2)\psi(x) = g(1 - x^2) is a composition of smooth functions, so it is smooth. Its support is [−1,1][-1, 1], which is compact.

Non-example: the Gaussian e−x2e^{-x^2} is smooth, but it is nonzero at every point, so its support ℝ\R is not compact. The tent function max⁡(0,1−∣x∣)\max(0, 1 - \abs{x}) has compact support [−1,1][-1, 1], but it is not differentiable at 00 and ±1\pm 1.

A bump function that is not identically zero is not analytic on ℝn\R^n, since an analytic function that vanishes on a nonempty open set of ℝn\R^n is zero. For each compact set KK and open set U⊇KU \supseteq K in ℝn\R^n, some bump function equals 11 on KK, takes values in [0,1][0, 1], and has support in UU.
