Definition

Let (V,η)(V, \eta) be Minkowski space. A Lorentz transformation is a linear map Λ ⁣:V→V\Lambda \colon V \to V such that η(Λx,Λy)=η(x,y)for all x,y∈V.\eta(\Lambda x, \Lambda y) = \eta(x, y) \quad \text{for all } x, y \in V. In a basis where η\eta has the matrix η=diag⁡(−1,1,1,1)\eta = \operatorname{diag}(-1, 1, 1, 1), this means ΛTηΛ=η\Lambda^T \eta \Lambda = \eta.

Remarks

Example: the boost with velocity vv along the x1x^1 axis, where ∣v∣<c\abs{v} < c, β=v/c\beta = v / c and γ=1/1−β2\gamma = 1/\sqrt{1 - \beta^2} is the Lorentz factor: x′0=γ(x0−βx1),x′1=γ(x1−βx0),x′2=x2,x′3=x3.x'^0 = \gamma (x^0 - \beta x^1), \quad x'^1 = \gamma (x^1 - \beta x^0), \quad x'^2 = x^2, \quad x'^3 = x^3. Check: −(x′0)2+(x′1)2=γ2(1−β2)(−(x0)2+(x1)2)=−(x0)2+(x1)2-(x'^0)^2 + (x'^1)^2 = \gamma^2 (1 - \beta^2) \big( -(x^0)^2 + (x^1)^2 \big) = -(x^0)^2 + (x^1)^2, because the cross terms ±2γ2βx0x1\pm 2 \gamma^2 \beta x^0 x^1 cancel. With x0=ctx^0 = ct these are the familiar formulas t′=γ(t−vx/c2)t' = \gamma (t - v x / c^2) and x′=γ(x−vt)x' = \gamma (x - v t). Non-example: the Galilean transformation t′=tt' = t, x′=x−vtx' = x - vt with v≠0v \ne 0 is linear but does not preserve η\eta. It sends (ct,x)=(c,0)(ct, x) = (c, 0) to (c,−v)(c, -v), and −c2+v2≠−c2-c^2 + v^2 \ne -c^2. The Lorentz transformations form the Lorentz group O(1,3)O(1, 3). Every Lorentz transformation with det⁡Λ=1\det \Lambda = 1 that preserves the direction of time is a rotation followed by a boost. A Lorentz transformation followed by a translation is a Poincaré transformation; some authors call these inhomogeneous Lorentz transformations.
